Of course there are other methods which work well enough too, but if hitting rec and playing pads doesn't appeal to you, you're not going to be able to make use of its fastest input method.I do have Maschine mk2 now, alongside the analog rytm and analog four. Note entering is primarily via real-time playing (pads) or an attached keyboard. Like an Elektron you don't need to halt playback to compose, however the similarity ends there. As others have said, it is a whole different concept. It won't operate the same way as an electron unit though. If you set up your sample to release after some set time, you can have a note cut off whenever you please using note length features. You have ADSR for every pad, for example. It's a sampler, so basically whatever you can do to a sample, it will allow you to do. In any case, if to edit this you need to go to an even, open an edit list and edit from there - it sounds a bit un-intuitive and laborious. If you want the functionality of an Elektron or other step-based sequencer, you won't find it here. The closest example i can think of for "gate" is if you take a 16 step sequence of a synth bass sound that has an envelope on the filter, and the note resets every 1/16th - but you can still shorten its gate by decreasing the decay time on the envelope. Sequences can be from 1 beat to hundreds of measures long. Decrease it further, and it's staccato.Īn MPC is a linear sequencer. If you decrease it, it is a non-legato 16th note. As a side note, in music theory terms, if you increase the length of a note to longer than 1/16th of a whole note, it is no longer a 16th note. "Gate" is not terminology in MPC land (as far as I know). If you want the functionality of an Elektron or other step-based sequencer, you won't find it here. On an MPC, in List Edit mode, you can edit at what time in the sequence the event (note, automation, whatever) appears (quantized or free), what that note/pad is, the length of that event (what I believe you are using "gate" to refer to), the velocity, and the value.Īn MPC is a linear sequencer.

So from your terminology i understand that the MPC does not have control over an individual note's gate length, the same way as, say, an elektron step sequencer lets you."Gate" is not terminology in MPC land (as far as I know).

As far as i know, note length is whether it is an 1/8 or 1/16 etc - while with gate length you could take a sequence of 16 steps, each of a 1/16th note length, and on top of that increase or decrease the notes gate or even individual note gate. Just to make sure we're using the same terminology - "note length" isn't the same as "gate length".
